In most of our Bookpal blogs, we have mentioned the importance of books in the lives of children and adults. So, in this blog as well, we are going to first talk about the importance of books for children and then we will be listing out some pointers that parents need to keep in mind when purchasing books for their little ones. So, why should we read books? It is because we get so much of our knowledge from them and we cannot even imagine our life without them. Although the social media revolution has changed the entire scenario of the world, some people prefer to read a wide variety of books to gain extra knowledge. This helps to keep their mind sharp and healthy. Thus, if we introduce our children to the world of books, then their mind expands to a great degree and they are interested in reading even more books. So, parents need to keep their children’s minds always on alert by bringing home the new books every time they finish their old ones. But, there are some pointers that parents need to keep in mind when selecting the proper books for their kids. If parents follow these essential pointers, then we are sure that they will pick the right books for their children. In this blog, we will be exploring some such pointers. So, let’s start by listing these essential pointers. Tips to Keep in Mind when Purchasing a Book for Your Children We are now going to divide this blog into 4 parts as we want to focus on choosing books for children of all ages.

1. First up are babies and toddlers. So, make sure you pick books that do not have words, only pictures. Also, the content should be easy to understand for the child and the book should contain objects of simple things. When your infant sees these pictures, he/she will gain an active imagination and will also try to form their own stories. Try to buy board books or cloth books as they will not get destroyed by toddlers easily. Additionally, your baby is more of a listener and they are good listeners so they will grasp the story more meaningfully if they hear you.

2. The second group of children is preschoolers and kindergarteners. They are a bit more advanced than the toddler stage and they would like to have books that can give them a sense of astonishment and wonder at the same time. These children will understand a few complex sentences which have a good rhythm and repetition to them. So, you can buy pop-up books, moving books etc. Additionally, they enjoy nursery stories, mother-goose rhymes, and such themes.

3. The third group of children includes the early school-goers in the age group of 5-8 years. Early graders are quick learners. Some may learn to read even before entering first grade, some learn during the first grade and some may even learn later. Choose books that have a few characters and a strong storyline. This helps your children to understand new words, and sentences which they can then use in their everyday language. Most third graders can handle stories that have some amount of complexity in them. Nowadays, many writers and publishing houses have introduced educational books for children that provide them entertainment as well.

4. And finally, the last category is the older school children who are in the age group of 9 years and above. These kids are now more mature than babies and can handle short novels and stories that suit their tastes. So, they should be given books of their choice. As every child’s personality is different, so they should be given books according to their personality traits as well. So, these are some of the pointers that you need to keep in mind when selecting books for children. You would not prefer giving your child a wrong book that does not interest him/her.
