  • How to get yourself to read more
  • Discussing practical methods that can be implemented by anyone

With everything going online, it is hard to find habits that are away from the screen. Now that we also have summer vacations around the corner, and plausible holidays to go to, the most efficient hobby to pick up is reading.

Even in general, reading is an important habit that we should all be inculcating in our lives. If you have been struggling with adding it to your life, or your young ones, and want to find some efficient ways, then keep reading to keep reading!

Start with short stories and poems

If you are trying to get into reading, do not start with big books, as they can be overwhelming. Start with poems, short stories, and novellas so that you don’t feel like you have a herculean task to get through.

Some good collections of short stories include -

  1. Short stories by Rabindranath Tagore
  2. The Best Indian Short Stories, curated by Khushwant Singh
  3. Greatest Short Stories, Mulk Raj Anand
  4. The Greatest Short Stories of Leo Tolstoy

You can get these from our BookPal library, and take a look for yourself. All of these have stories that will make you want to keep flipping the pages and who knows, maybe you’d end up writing a story yourself!

Create a routine

Instead of thinking of finishing the book in one go, make a routine. Try finishing a number of pages every day, and increasing it subsequently.

Join a book club

If there is one around you, join it. If not, you can try making one with your friends, neighbors, and other people who are interested. If you live in a joint family, getting all your cousins and other relatives to join in would be a fun idea as well!

Do not compare

Do not waste your time thinking about how much you should be reading. Everyone is different and such things don’t have a linear graph. If you manage to read one book every month, that is good too. If it is a bigger one, take some more time. The important thing is whether you learn something from it or not.

Revisit old favorites

Yes, we are talking about the good old books that you read when you were young. When you revisit familiar things, your brain falls back into that pattern. Reading Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Feluda, and other such books will make you recall how fun it is to just spend some time tucked away from the world, in another world of your own.

Read whenever you can

Carry a book with you, whether on your phone or a physical copy. We would definitely recommend the latter as it cancels out other distractions. Read when you are in transit, in the metro, or by taxi. You can take a couple books with you on your summer vacation and spend some time just reading.

Try reading one poem every day

Words are words, no matter what form you consume them in. You can try reading one poem every day in the morning or when you are about to go to bed so that you get familiar with the pattern of reading and have something to think about each day.

We hope these methods help you, regardless of your age group. Happy reading!
