  • Three books that you can give to your child to read

  • How to make sure they are reading it

  • What can you do as a parent in order to support your child’s reading habit?

With summer break around the corner, you too must have come face to face with a long list of books that your child will have to go through. If your child is a natural reader, you must be relaxed. However, if your child is not into reading, you must be wondering how to tackle the list. One thing is for sure though, with such huge lists, and an entire month to go through them, your child will definitely turn into some kind of reader, if given the right support.

So, how can you actually get your child to get into reading as a habit? Here are three books that you can give them that will help them enjoy stories!

Hardy Boys Series by Franklin W Dixon.

Who doesn’t love a good mystery? And if it is a couple of boys who are around your age who are trying to get to the bottom of things, then it is even more interesting.

Get some of the books from the series and have your child befriend Frank and Joe Hardy while attempting to solve the mysteries themselves.

You can let your child pick one of the books from our vast collection of this series at BookPal and see if they like it for themselves or not.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

This magical fantasy series is currently the rage everywhere! It has everything that you could possibly want in a book - magic, realism, teenagers who have powers, a lovely lesson about friendship and family, and lots of characters to dream about yourself!

When I first read this series, I was pulled into the world of Adam, Gansey, Blue, Ronan, and Noah very easily. Since it is a series, it makes it even more wonderful - you put one book down and are on to the next one.

If your child is tired of the boring school routine and is out of inspiration, turn their lazy summer vacation afternoons into something full of possibilities by issuing The Raven Cycle from our catalog!

Lord of The Flies by William Golding

Is it even your summer vacations if you don’t have a life-changing moment that makes you alter the way you view the world? This book is the exact dose of that. Following stranded boys on an island, it will help your young adult question methods and reasons about everything. Be ready to answer questions such as who and why and what for real soon. Another suggestion - such books are best read in a book club because it will help bring in newer perspectives!

What can you as a parent do to encourage your child’s reading habits?

Here are a few things that you can do as a parent that will help inculcate a reading habit in your child -

  1. Allow your child to pick and choose the books that they want. Children are exempt from the rule of not judging a book by its cover. Let them pick and choose and keep it back. Trial and error is the way to go.

  2. Do not judge their reading choices. If all they want to read is fantasy, then so be it, they will grow out of it real soon.

  3. Get them a library card made so that their reading adventures are easy on your pocket and also support local libraries.

  4. Do not force them to read things or think about things a certain way. Let them grow into their own.

  5. Discuss things with them! Hear them out, what they thought about the book, and why they think the ending could have been different.

Happy Reading!
