Happy Holi _BookPal Perespective

Holi is a major festival in India and is known as the festival of colours. People all over the country celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm.

Holi is generally associated with Lord Krishna as he used to play Holi with all the milkmaids in Mathura and Vrindavan. This play of Lord Krishna and the Gopis is known as Raaslila.

In Radhaji’s home in Barsana and Krishnaji’s home in Nandgaon, people play Holi in a very unique style. They do use colours but here, women use big and heavy sticks known as Lath that they use to hurl their husbands or other men out of Barsana in a playful manner.

The festival of Lathmar Holi lasts for about a week and ends on Rang Panchami.

The legend behind this unique style of Holi is associated with the story of Radha and Krishna. Once upon a time, during the festival of Holi, Lord Krishna and his friends decided to spray colour on His beloved Radha. But when He and his friends entered the village of Barsana, they were greeted by Radha and her friends with lathis with which they drove them out of Barsana.

Since that time, people in both the villages have upheld the tradition and enjoy it in a gleeful manner every year. Lathmar Holi is viewed by thousands of spectators and tourists who visit India during the festival.

Holi is also celebrated with such fervour because on this day, Lord Vishnu defeated Hiranyakashipu when he came in His avatar of Lord Narsimha.

Holi has many names all throughout India. Some of those names are Rangwali Holi, Dol Purnima, Dhuleti, Dhulandi, Ukuli, Manjal Kuli, Yaosang, Shigmo or Phagwah and Jajiri.

The festival of Holi celebrates the eternal and divine love of Lord Krishna and Radha. It also marks the arrival of spring and the farewell of winter.
