9. You can also read to your child in two languages as it will help to develop their language skills, and they may become fluent in two or more languages. One of those languages should be the child’s mother tongue while the other can be a foreign language like English.

10. Dual-language books are available nowadays and are a great resource for children today as they will help them learn English easily at kindergarten, playgroup or school.

11. Make storytime a regular part of your and your child’s life. Select a comfortable spot and chair as these are the only things that you and your child require. Read stories and explain difficult words to your child as you read. Also, ask them for summaries of the stories after you are done with them.

12. When you and your child are out of the home, and you have not brought your child’s storybook or you can’t make up stories on the spot, then you can involve your child in other literary activities like making them read food packaging information, make them read printed T-shirts and ask them what does it say it on the T-shirt etc.

13. When reading with your children you should turn off electronic devices such as smartphones, radios, television etc. When you read in a less distracting environment, then you and your child can gain so much out of a single book in a day.

14. Choose books that have a good rhyme, repetition and rhythm to them. Usually, children love books that have a constant repetition to them and they engage with the story more.

15. Also, books should be of the right length and one which is of your child’s interest as well. Books spanning more than 10-15 pages can be a handful for an infant or toddler.

16. You can keep changing the format of books for your child. Select from magazines, storybooks, e-readers, picture books, instruction manuals, TV guides etc. This will enable your children to acquaint themselves with different pieces of literature from an early age.

17. Make sure that you and your child sign up at a local library. This way, you both will have access to a variety of reading materials and can spend some quality time together.

18. Some libraries also issue children’s books for free. This means you won’t have to pay a single penny and your children can read some great classics as well.

19. Additionally, you can also avail yourself of the facilities of story time that the library organizes from time to time. These activities also facilitate language learning in your child.

20. Always display your motivation for reading even if your child is against the idea. Sooner or later, they will develop an interest in books.

So, this is what your children can gain by reading books. You must keep reading to your child from time to time. The habit of reading must not die between you and your child. Even when your children grow up, they will keep reading books as now their interest has been piqued by their parents when they were in their childhood. So, enjoy the time with your little ones as much as you can and make sure you keep reading to them day in and day out.
